Joan Alvado is an independent photographer based in Barcelona since 2005.
His work focuses on long-term documentary projects around the concept of the unexpected, seeking to break with visual clichés and established stereotypes.

Part of his work resides in public and private collections in Germany, USA or Spain, and have been exhibited in galleries and photo festivals in several countries. His projects have been published in international media such as Newsweek, CNN, The Washington Post, Der Spiegel, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Burn Magazine, Leica Fotografie International (LFI), El País, La Repubblica, Polka or VICE, among others.

Between 2015 and 2018, his project "School of Shepherds" receives the Lens Culture Emerging Talent Award and is selected for Descubrimientos PhotoEspaña. The project has been exhibited in the Camera Work gallery of San Francisco, and in the festivals Docfield (Bcn), Noviembre Fotográfico (La Habana), Photogenic (Barcelona) PhotoAlicante, Biennal Xavier Miserachs of Palafrugell and the Photography Biennal Fotonoviembre de Tenerife, among others. In 2018, the project is published as a photobook, edited by Pol·len Edicions.

The project "Cuban Muslims, Tropical Faith" wins in 2016 the "New FNAC photography talent" award in Spain. "Cuban Muslims" is also awarded at the CENTER Choice Awards (USA), and selected finalist of the Emergentes DST Prize by Encontros da Imagem festival (Braga, Portugal) and finalist also in the Kolga Tbilisi Photo Awards (Georgia). "Cuban Muslims" also have received honorable mentions in the Visura Scholarships for the development of personal projects (2016 and 2017), the Gomma Grant program (Italy) and the International Photo Awards 2016.

Since 2018, he is working on “The Last Man on Earth” an essay about the relation between nature and extreme depopulation, done with the support of the Leica LFI LoanPool program.
